The Boston Globe, an award-winning print and online daily news publication based in Boston, Massachusetts, implemented a program to modernize their newspaper printing operations. The long-term strategic plan for printing operations demanded the capacity to print and distribute a range of products that could not be printed using their current presses. This program involved relocating their current printing facility from downtown Boston to an existing 285,000 SF building in nearby Taunton, Massachusetts.

The Austin Company was released to provide architectural design and engineering services for The Boston Globe’s renovation of an existing facility that became the newspaper production facility. The new facility provides increased productivity and profitability from improved logistics to meet long-term business objectives, improved layout, and improved employee support areas and amenities. Existing packaging equipment was relocated to the new facility and used printing presses were purchased and reconfigured at the new facility to allow The Boston Globe to produce a broader range of products. The project was completed on an accelerated schedule.

The final press configuration allows The Globe to create a variety of high-quality products. Products can easily be reconfigured to meet the demands of their growing list of print customers. Packaging and distribution operations are handled on equipment that was consolidated from three locations that were operated by The Globe.
